The best waterproof make-up products

Make a splash this summer! Here I talk the best waterproof makeup products with Marie Claire Beauty Director Lisa Oxenham…

When you hit the beach, it’s essential that your beauty products can withstand water. The best waterproof makeup products have breathable textures and high-octane colour that’s deigned to withstand the sea, sweat and humidity preventing your makeup from melting, sliding or fading. Dive in!

BASE

Hard-working: MAC Pro Longwear Nourishing Waterproof Foundation, £25.50, maccosmetics.co.uk is ultra long-wearing, waterproof and transfer resistant or try VICHY Dermablend 16H Fluid Foundation, £18.00, boots.com, which goes on smoothly and still manages to maintain great coverage that lasts the whole day. Find more long-wearing foundations perfect for your skin on Powder.

Light coverage: “Some formulas are too thick – it’s like wearing a blanket on your face,” says Deveney. “You want your skin to breathe and sunlight is very unforgiving: you really don’t want to look as if you’re wearing anything, even though you are.” Go for Guerlain’s new Terracotta Sun Protection Compact Foundation SPF 20, £41.00, Harrods, which gives great coverage with the added benefits of SPF protection or try Laura Mercier Silk Crème Photo Edition Foundation, £35.00, John Lewis.

Primers: Primers are essential for summer, they smooth skin, help disguise blemishes and, most importantly, help create the perfect base to stop your makeup sliding off. Tom Ford’s Complexion Enhancing Primer £54.00 (launching in August, stockist: 0870 034 2566) looks set to be a sell-out!

Makeup fixers: To render any product waterproof, use the tried and tested VICHY Dermablend Setting Powder, £16.00, boots.com, which helps reinforce makeup against perspiration, bathing and rubbing.

EYES

Mascara: For most people waterproof mascara is the only holiday essential. All brands now offer beautifying benefits as well as plunge-proofing qualities. Your spoilt for choice for these. Some of our favourites include:YSL Mascara Volume Effect Faux Cils £25.00, fabled.com
Rimmel London Wonder’Full Waterproof Mascara, £7.99, fabled.com
Lancome Hypnose Waterproof Mascara, £22.50, fabled.com
Guerlain Cils D’Enfer Maxi Lash Waterproof Mascara, £24.00, Harrods
Revlon Bold Lacquer Length & Volume Mascara (Waterproof), £9.99
Urban Decay Mascara Resurrection, £10, Debenhams
Eyeko SPORT Waterproof Mascara in Black, £18, fabled.com
Clinique High Impact Waterproof Mascara, £17.50, fabled.com, or
TOPSHOP Party Proof Intense Mascara £10.00.

Eyeliner: I suggests avoiding mascara altogether and instead going for loads of waterproof eye pencil. For a slick that sticks try Stila Stay All Day Smudge Stick Waterproof Eyeliner, £13.00, fabled.com, which really lives up to its name—they don’t come off until you swab them with makeup remover. Or try Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kohl Liner £16.00, or Benefit They’re Real Liner, £18.50, fabled.com. Or for a more natural look Deveney recommend’s Lancôme Ombre Hypnose Intense 24H eyeshadow stick, £20, fabled.com. ‘I love making the lashes appear fuller by defining the lashline, applying the Taupe shade into the roots of the lashes,’ she says.

Eyeshadows: Great waterproof eye shadows can be found try Guerlain Waterproof Cream Eye Shadow, £22.00, Selfridges, which comes in two gorgeous shades for this season or TOPSHOP Long Lasting Crème Eyeshadow £8.00. Then invest in an eye-shadow primer. We swear by Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, £16.00, to keep us raccoon-eye-free for the summer months – it’s a protective base for eyelids for extra resistance to water.

Makeup fixers:Clarins Double Fix Mascara, £20.00 has stood the test of time and for good reason. Brush lightly over mascara to seal in and add an extra layer of protection against the elements.

Best remover: Worried about it never coming off? Don’t be, Chanel’s Demaquillant Yeux Intense Eye Makeup remover, £22.00, boots.com makes even the toughest eye make up gently come away without irritating your eyes or try Simple’s Kind to Skin Micellar Cleansing Water, £4.99, boots.com.

LIPS

Intense pigment: Many lip and cheek colours have water-resistant properties because they are formulated with waxes and oils. Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Colour Moisturising Lipstick, £20.00, has high-impact colour but the waxy texture acts as a repellent against the water keeping the protective pigment on your lips or try Guerlain Hydrating Long- Lasting Lip Colour, £26.50.

Gloss lovers: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick, £16.00, fabled.com, has a stead fast formula which combines the texture and shine of a gloss with an ultra long wearing stain. “If it’s got a high wax content, it’ll stay put,” says Deveney.
Steadfast formula: We recommend layering a lip liner underneath if you’re looking to extend your lipstick’s wear time for as long as possible. Urban Decay’s Ultimate Ozone Multipurpose Primer Pencil, £15.00, fabled.com, is ideal and because it’s clear it works for all your favourite shades.

BLUSH AND BRONZE

There is nothing fresher than a rosy glow in your cheeks at summer. Try TOPSHOP Lip & Cheek Smudge, £8.50. If you are looking for a little bronze for the face try Stila’s brand new Stay All Day Bronzer for Face and Body, £28.00, fabled.com, or Rimmel’s Natural Bronzing Powder Sun Glow (which is waterproof), £5.99, fabled.com.

Makeup artists love: Urban Decay Afterglow 8 Hour Powder Blush, £19.00, fabled.com, ‘They don’t claim to be waterproof but they do have a long-lasting effect on the beach,’ says Deveney.

BROWS

Brows are one of the biggest beauty statements you can make right now. Whether you are dark and bushy or prefer a sleeked back look there is no reason you shouldn’t have brows to be proud of whatever the weather. Try Lancôme Sourcils Gel, Waterproof Eyebrow Gel-Cream, £22, fabled.com, which applies easily and lasts all day or MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set, £13.00 for ultra long-lasting hold that keeps your brows look tidy even in very humid conditions.
